Summary

The Road, by Cormac McCarthy, is a profound story of a journey south taken by a father and his son after an unnamed catastrophe has struck the world. The man and the boy, who remain unnamed throughout the entire novel, travel through the rough terrain of the southeastern United States where the conditions they face are unforgiving. These two travelers are among the few living creatures remaining on earth who have not been driven to murder, rape, and cannibalism. Instead, they are driven by the "fire" within them, a metaphor of the goodness in heart they hold. With great values and morals at heart these two characters carry on and live to keep goodness alive.
