Book Review

McCarthy’s most recent, The Road, combines terse, poetic meditations on the horrific depths of human depravity with the taut, thriller writing found in his most recent work. What distinguishes The Road from McCarthy's other works is how he captures moments of lyrical and emotional beauty in a father and son’s haunted relationship even as a silent cloud of death covers the world in darkness. A lot of what makes this book so good is how McCarthy seems to write this book as test to the nature of humans. With no rules to follow and no authority to obey most people turn to the evil side of their heart only to fulfill their hunger and secure their ignorance. McCarthy taps into to the good of human nature through the two protagonists, the man and boy, who live holding on to higher more meaningful values than just to survive. In this way, McCarthy proves the importance of values when determining measures of human nature. Having been written by a master author this book really Sears its mark into your mind starting the moment you read the first sentence. This is definitely one of those books you just never want to put down once you so quickly get engaged. This is an outstanding book for bold readers which is why it is only really recommended for an older audience. As one of McCarthy's best books yet, I highly recommend reading this book along with watching the film which really helps capture the setting and mood.
